چکیده

Although it is now well established that a variety of ocular and systemic diseases, including diabetes, are harmful to the SWS cone pathway, causing a decrease in SW sensitivity,"the site(s) of the loss is not well known. The loss in SW sensitivity in diabetes has been variously attributed to changes in the lens, loss of SWS cone receptors due to their greater vulnerability to insult, the reduced response range of normal SWS cones relative to LWS cones, and postreceptoral SWS functional losses either at the opponent site or beyond the opponent site.

Optomotor and immunohistochemical changes in the juvenile S334ter rat.

The aim of this study was to examine the temporal relationship between behaviorally measured visual thresholds, photoreceptor degeneration and dysfunction, synaptic and neuronal morphology changes in the retina in the S334ter line 4 rat. Specifically, we examined the optokinetic tracking (OKT) behavior in S334ter rats daily and found that OKT thresholds reflected normal values at eye opening bu...

Motion perception deficits in albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo)

Albino ferrets contrary to their pigmented conspecifics show no optokinetic nystagmus. Therefore, in this study motion perception was compared between pigmented and albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) trained to discriminate between coherently moving random dot patterns and dynamic noise stimuli in a two-alternative forced choice task. Fully coherently versus incoherently moving patterns cou...

DeWcits of visual motion perception and optokinetic nystagmus after posterior suprasylvian lesions in the ferret (Mustela putorius furo)

We recently described an area in the ferret posterior suprasylvian (PSS) cortex characterized by a high proportion of direction selective neurons. To answer the question whether area PSS subserves functions similar to cat posteromediolateral suprasylvian area (PMLS) and monkey medial temporal area (MT) we investigated the contribution of area PSS to visual motion perception and optokinetic nyst...

Infant luminance and chromatic contrast sensitivity: Optokinetic nystagmus data on 3-month-olds

Infant color vision is poor, and most psychophysical experiments agree that infant color vision emerges between ages 3 weeks and 3 months. Presumably, the color vision of infants is poor during the months immediately after it has emerged. We have tested two alternative explanations for the poor color vision of infants: (1) there is a special critical immaturity within the color pathways of infa...

Motion coherence thresholds in infants––different tasks identify at least two distinct motion systems

Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) can be demonstrated from birth, but behavioural discrimination tasks such as habituation and preferential looking do not reveal any sensitivity to motion direction until a few weeks of age. This study compared coherence threshold for motion direction for OKN and preferential looking responses using closely comparable stimuli, in infants between 6 and 27 weeks of age....
